Workshops

Speaking activity

A week before Carnival I assigned the workshops for LG students to be presented on March 24. They were supposed to work in pairs or triads at most (stds chose who they wanted to work with), the presentation should last 5 to 15 minutes (not less than 5).

Stds had to "teach" the audience something (also free choice) and they could bring any material they needed to enrich the presentation. No reading was allowed since the activity would be their grade for "produção oral" (cards with topics were OK, so stds wouldn't have 'blanks' during presentation). They also had to hand in a paper describing the steps to the process they were presenting (not long, one page only).

Before presentation day I allowed two 15' periods from class to work on the project, after one of which they handed in a draft of what they were working on (the drafts should not be corrected, they served as a tool to guarantee they were working on the project and not on anything else).

One class before presentation we set the order of the groups to avoid time-consuming  arguing on who would go first.

The worshops were successful! Stds were really engaged and willing to show their "skills" to their peers. The audience was also very interested and participated when necessary...most of the groups received applauses !!

There were all kinds of workshops...from cooking to the "geography of heavy metal music"... I believe giving the stds the opportunity to choose the topic of their presentations was the best way to make "school responsibility" become something enjoyable and involving.
