Caption Project

‘A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words’

Part 1 – Creating Captions

1. The students were shown some pictures of animals with humorous sentences and quotations. (See examples below. All the pictures were taken from the site FunPic)

2. Many posters of animals without any kind of captions were hung on the walls. As the pictures are pretty cute and humorous, students really appreciated the effect they had on the class.

3. Students were invited to write captions to some pictures they chose on a sheet of paper. The animal photos provided enough inspiration for very creative sentences.

4. The mistakes, which caused the captions to be misunderstood, were corrected.

5. After receiving the sheets (back), students wrote the captions on stickers and stuck them on the posters.

6. Every time students got into the class they looked for new captions  written   by their colleagues. They seemed to be specially concerned not only  with the   messages, but also with the authors who wrote them.

7a. The following step was to allow them to create as many captions as  they  wanted according to their motivation to do so.

7b. Students were invited to create more captions after some communicative  activities or structure presentations - as a 'production' activity.

Part 2 – Taking a Picture and Creating a Caption

1. We had a discussion on the topic 'love' and in its possible forms - they came up with 'types' of love like family, sports, friendship, girl/boyfriend, pets, and nature among others.

2. Students were asked to take a picture and create a caption for it.

3. Students were shown a 'sample' of a picture with a caption displayed with a PASSE-PAR-TOUT.
