Biography

Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (guitar) formed the band Rose with Tracii Guns (guitar) and Rob Gardner (drums). The band went through a series of name changes including Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. Guns and Gardner left and were replaced by Slash and Steven Adler. With the addition of bassist Duff McKagan, the band was renamed Guns N' Roses. They released an EP, Live?!*@ Like A Suicide, on the independent Uzi/Suicide label and in 1986 the band signed to Geffen Records, who reissued the EP in 1987.
Their debut album, 1987's Appetite For Destruction, made Guns N' Roses the biggest heavy metal group in the world. The album had a string of hits and eventually sold 20 million copies worldwide. In 1989, the eight-track album G N' R Lies was released and was also hit. It contained one half new acoustic songs and another reissue of the Live?!*@ Like A Suicide EP. In 1990, Adler was replaced by Matt Sorum from the Cult. They also added Dizzy Reed (keyboards) for a 1991 tour. Later that year, Guns N' Roses released a pair of albums, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, which were also huge.
Izzy Stradlin left towards the end of 1991. He was replaced by Gilby Clarke, but Guns N' Roses would not release another album until 1993's The Spaghetti Incident, a collection of cover songs. Countless personnel changes followed with no new albums. In 1999, Guns N' Roses appeared on the soundtrack of End Of Days with the new song "Oh My God", but an entirely new band was backing Axl Rose. With no new album, the new Guns N' Roses began to tour in 2002 but it was canceled after nine shows after Axl Rose showed up late a number of times and did not appear at all for two dates.
