In the middle of a heartbeat
Helloween
Along with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, fellow '80s metalheads Helloween helped establish and expand the heavy metal scene in both America and Europe.
Formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1984 by guitarist Michael Weikath and guitarist/vocalist Kai Hansen -- and featuring bassist Markus Grosskopf and drummer Indo Schwichenburg -- Helloween provided an aesthetic of melodic guitar rock that lasted well into the '90s.
Helloween
debuted in 1985 with a self-titled album and followed with the critically
successful Walls of Jericho in 1986. By the time they released Keeper of the
Seven Keys, Pt. 1, which many argue is their best release, Hansen had left the
band and was replaced by Michael Kiske (18), whose shrill shouting added to the
group's penchant for high-speed rock drills. Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt. 2
followed in 1988.
After releasing two live albums in the late '80s, Helloween underwent some major lineup changes. Kiske was replaced by vocalist Andi Deris, while Schwichenburg handed his sticks to drummer Uli Kusch. With the new lineup in place, the band headed into the '90s with Master of the Rings, in addition to The Best, The Rest and the Rare which appeared in 1991.
Pink Bubbles Go Ape and Time of the Oath were released in 1996. Guitarist Roland Grapow appeared on the scene before the release of 1998's Better Than Raw.
The band toured some countries with Iron Maiden. They also came to Brazil in 1998.
